St.Isidore the Farmer – was a Spanish farm worker outside the city of Madrid. Many marvelous happenings accompanied his lifelong work in the fields and continued long after his death. He is the Patron Saint of Farmers. He also works faithfully on his estate outside the city for the rest of his life.
St.Roch, Patron Saint of Dogs and Dog Lovers – also known as St.Rocco, a nobleman from Montpellier, France, the only son of the wealthy governor of the city. St.Roch was born with an unusual and deep red mark on his chest in the shape of a cross, a sign that the Blessed Virgin Mary had heard and answered his mother’s prayers for her barrenness to be healed. As a child St. Roch was deeply religious, fasting twice a week after the example of his pious mother. His parents died when he was twenty years of age, after which he gave his inheritance to the poor, handed the government of the city over to his uncle, and began a new life as a poor mendicant pilgrim.
St George – Saint George is the patron saint of England. He’s popularly identified with England and English ideals of honour, bravery and gallantry – but actually he wasn’t English at all. Very little, if anything, is known about the real Saint George. Pope Gelasius said that George is one of the saints “whose names are rightly reverenced among us, but whose actions are known only to God.” He is patron saint not only of England but also of Aragon, Catalonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal, Germany and Greece; and of Moscow, Istanbul, Genoa and Venice (second to Saint Mark). He’s also patron saint of soldiers, archers, cavalry and chivalry, farmers and field workers, riders and saddlers, and he helps those suffering from leprosy, plague and syphilis. In recent years he has been adopted as patron saint of Scouts.
St Bruno – was born in Cologne and studied at the Cathedral in Rheims. He was obtained in 1055 and became a professor of theology. He was one of the most remarkable scholars and teachers of his time. He and six companions built a monastery and founded the Carthusians order in 1084. They embraced poverty, manual labor, prayer and transcribing manuscripts. Their fame spread and Bruno became an adviser to the Pope. After 6 years he founded St.Mary’s monastery in Calabria, He passed away in 1101.
St Francis Xavier – was born in Spain and with St.Ignatius Loyola became one of the seven who founded the Society of Jesuits. He preached for 6 months in Africa on his way to Asia where he spent the remainder of his life spreading the Word of God in India, Japan and the Philippines.
